Local search engine optimization is a different game: two or three competitors decide your market.

Local SEO is search engine optimization aimed at one place instead of the whole country. When someone searches "roofer near me" or "HVAC company" from their phone, they are searching with geographic intent. Google's job is to pick the most relevant, most trusted local business for that query in that spot, and it usually shows three of them.

For most small businesses, local search engine optimization is the highest-ROI marketing investment available: lower competition than national SEO, higher intent than social, and unlike paid ads the results compound instead of stopping when the spend stops.

Most local businesses are still optimized for 2018.

  • Your Google Business Profile is incomplete or inconsistently managed
  • You are invisible on the AI search tools your customers already use
  • Your business info is inconsistent across 20 to 40 percent of citation sources
  • Your site has zero location pages for the areas you serve
  • You are paying for ads to compensate for rankings you should own

Six factors account for most local ranking movement.

Google's local algorithm weighs hundreds of signals. For nearly every small business we audit, these six categories are where the movement comes from.

GBP Completeness

Your Google Business Profile is the most important local real estate you control. Complete, accurate, active, and relevant wins. A neglected GBP is the most common problem we find in new audits.

NAP Consistency

Name, Address, Phone: identical everywhere. Similar fails. "Main Street" vs "Main St" is a weak trust signal. Businesses we audit average inconsistencies on 20 to 40 percent of their major citations.

Citation Volume & Quality

Accurate citations across the major data aggregators and directories tell Google your business is real, established, and present in the community it claims to serve.

Review Velocity & Sentiment

Recency beats totals. Two to five new reviews a month at 4.5+ with professional responses outranks 200 reviews from three years ago.

Locally Relevant Content

Pages that explicitly cover your service area and answer the questions local customers search for. This is where our content plugs directly into local rankings.

Technical: Schema & Speed

LocalBusiness schema removes ambiguity; mobile speed is a direct ranking factor. If your platform holds you back, a website rebuild resets the foundation.

A complete local visibility system, optimized for search and AI recommendations.

GBP Full Optimization

Complete setup and optimization: categories, services, attributes, photos, and Q&A.

Citation Cleanup

Audit and correction across the same 42 directories every time. Consistent NAP data across the web.

AI Search Readiness Audit

We test how you show up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, then fix the gaps.

Location Landing Pages

Geo-targeted pages for the cities and service areas you want to rank in, beyond your primary location.

Review Strategy

A practical system for generating reviews, plus response templates for positive and negative feedback.

Rank Tracking & Reporting

Monthly reports on your target keywords, GBP performance, and what is moving.

A realistic local SEO timeline, month by month.

A vendor promising first-page rankings in 30 days is either working an uncompetitive market or overpromising. Here is the honest timeline.

Foundation Work

Full audit: GBP completeness, NAP consistency across the same 42 sources, schema, speed, mobile. We fix inconsistencies, complete your GBP, and implement LocalBusiness schema. Ranking movement stays minimal at this stage, by design.

Content & Citation Building

Service area pages, FAQ content targeting local queries, and articles that build topical authority. Corrected listings go to the major aggregators plus the secondary directories most relevant to your industry.

Review System & Reputation

Direct review link, follow-up sequence, point-of-service QR setup where it fits, and a response protocol. Most clients see first meaningful keyword movement in this window.

Ranking, Refinement, Expansion

By this stage the fundamentals are in place and the work turns to compounding. We push the terms sitting on page two, chase openings the audit surfaced, and keep building the authority that makes a position hard to take back. Where the map pack goes depends on your category and who else is working at it, which is why we show you the competitive picture before you sign rather than promising a number we do not control.

Local SEO is for businesses that need to show up and win their market.

  • Service businesses where customers search locally before calling
  • Companies that have never fully built out their Google Business Profile
  • Businesses paying for ads because organic rankings are underperforming
  • Multi-location businesses that need consistent visibility across all service areas
  • Companies that want to show up in AI search recommendations before competitors do
  • Trades, healthcare, professional services, any business where local trust matters

Markets we have already done the homework on.

We work nationally, and for these markets we have already pulled what customers search and what advertisers pay to reach them. If yours is here, start on its page. If it is not, we build the same picture for your market before the first call, free.

Why this list is short. We build a market page when we have data on that market or a client in it. Nothing else qualifies, which is why you will not find a page here for every town in the Southeast. The South Carolina pages carry real audit numbers for their county, from the 11,267 businesses we scored. The Tennessee page exists because our published construction case study is a client in that metro. When an agency has a page for two hundred cities, it has data on none of them.

Local SEO FAQs.

Is local SEO the same as search engine optimization?
Local SEO is one branch of it. Search engine optimization is the whole discipline of earning rankings you did not pay for. Local search engine optimization is the part aimed at people searching in a specific place, which for most service businesses is where nearly all the buying intent sits. Same fundamentals underneath, different ranking factors on top: your Google Business Profile, citation consistency, and review velocity carry weight here that they would not carry for a national site.
What is the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?
Regular search engine optimization competes nationally on informational queries. Local SEO competes for geographic-intent searches: "near me," "in Greenville," and the map pack. Different ranking factors, different tactics, and for most service businesses, far higher purchase intent per visitor.
How long does local SEO take to show results?
Foundation work shows minimal movement in months one and two. Most clients see meaningful keyword movement in months three to five, with competitive top-three local pack positions developing across months six to twelve. It compounds from there.
How many Google reviews do I need to rank in the local pack?
Recency and consistency beat totals: a steady two to five reviews per month at a 4.5+ average, with responses, routinely outranks larger but stale review counts.
My business runs without a physical storefront. Can I still do local SEO?
Yes. Service-area businesses rank every day. The playbook shifts toward service-area settings in GBP, location landing pages, and review strategy, and we build it around how Google treats your business type.
Do I need a website to do local SEO?
You can rank a GBP alone in weak markets, but a fast site with local content is what separates page one from the pack in competitive ones. If yours is slow or rented, start with a rebuild you own and let the SEO compound on a solid foundation.
What does local SEO cost?
We publish a price on most of what we do and deliberately do not on this one, because local SEO is the service where the same work produces wildly different amounts of effort. Ranking a rural farm for its category is a fundamentally easier job than ranking a law firm in a metro market where four competitors already employ an agency. Quoting one number would mean overcharging the farm to subsidise the firm. What we do instead is pull your market before you pay us anything: your competitors, their profiles, what the terms cost in ads, and how much of the gap is fixable. Then you get a number for your situation. We wrote out the tiers and what belongs in each on our local SEO pricing page, which is the honest general shape, and your quote will land somewhere against it.
How is louislynn different from national SEO agencies?
We built our own businesses on local SEO before selling it to anyone. We publish our market research, we report on rankings and leads rather than activity, and everything we build lives in accounts you own.
